ROSACIOLA & DE (CASULA) CUCULLA

A theater and film event

November 20, 2010 , 7pm, Free

LVPA (Ludi Variantur Plausus Augetur) is a theater group that was founded by a group of students of the Institute for Greek and Latin Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic in 2006. LVPA annually presents one Latin play, played as well as written by its members. So far, there have been four plays performed on various occasions not only for the students and staff of the Institute and other university and high school students, but also other fans of Latin theater. Live DVD recordings of few plays were also produced and presented earlier this year in Rome at an international Latin didactics conference.

In 2010, the group was awarded a grant by the Higher Education Development Fund, which enabled it to make a DVD which would serve as a multimedia educational material for teaching Latin language and Classical history. Thanks to this grant and the help of Mr. Tomáš Petráň from the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague a movie called ROSACIOLA (Sleeping Beauty) was made with the intention to be an attractive complement of the study of Latin on Czech high schools.

ROSACIOLA, the Movie will be premiered in the Czech Center, New York. However, the visitors will also have the opportunity to see LVPA’s live performance, DE (CASULA) CUCULLA, a combination of two previous plays: PARVA RUBRA CUCULLA (Little Red Riding Hood) and DE CASULA EX CRUSTVLIS CURVATIS EXSTRUCTA (Hansel and Grätel). This bold mix of both texts creates a postmodern intertextual complex, full of literary allusions, which provides a fresh, innovative presentation of the two famous fairytales in the settings of Classical Antiquity.

ROSACIOLA, the Movie will be presented with English subtitles. The play will be performed exclusively in Latin, but leaflets with both the original Latin text and its English translation will be provided.

ROSACIOLA et DE (CASULA) CUCULLA – pellicula didactica et fabula scaenica

Nonnulli alumnorum Instituti Graecitati et Latinitati augendae Universitatis Carolinae Pragensis aliquot ante annos gregem histrionum condiderunt cui LVPA (scilicet Ludi Variantur, Plausus Augetur) inscribitur quique ludos scaenicos Latinos unoquoque anno parare solet.
